Chapter 12

The room was still dark as Ambrielle rolled over in the bed. Squinting her eyes, she began to wake up. She walked over to the opaque window. “Clear the windows.”

The window changed to a transparent form, and light began to shine in, displaying all the buildings in the distance. She checked for more clothes. After specifying a few times what she wanted, she found a red top. It was too long, but the voice insisted it was the correct size and was merely a style choice of its designer. According to the assistant, the room had sensed her body configuration and measurements and automatically presented only clothing that would fit her. She found some short, dark gray pants that cut off above her knee to go with them.

The voice asked if she would like any food. After it listed off a menu of things that she was unfamiliar with, Ambrielle went with its recommendation. The voice announced that the food was ready. She checked around the room, not finding anything.

“Where is the food?” she asked.

“Located here,” said the voice.

“Where?” A light shone on a metal drawer in the lower part of one of the walls.

Opening the drawer, she found a container of heated food inside. She removed the container and set it on the bed. After she inquired about places to sit and eat, flexible metal squares moved out from a wall, and she found she could sit on one while using the other as a table.

Inside the container were some pieces of long, yellow leafy plants, an orange round piece of something, and two slices of some type of meat. She wondered where the meat came from. It made her a little afraid to try it, but the hesitance didn’t last for long. There was a tool inside the package that pinched together like large tweezers. The utensil was useful to pick up the meat, but she needed something to cut with.

When she tried it out on the yellow vegetables, she realized that it cut when she squeezed with more pressure. She went back to the meat and used the tool to cut it, which worked surprisingly well. Then she used it to pick up the piece of meat and put it in her mouth. It chewed like a tender, juicy steak, but the taste was a little different. It had sort of a turkey-sausage taste to it.

She tried some of the orange stuff. It had a mildly sweet taste but was also oddly spicy. It must have been some type of fruit. She tried the yellow leafy vegetable, but she didn’t like it as much. It wasn’t bad, but it had a peculiar taste that she couldn’t quite compare to anything.

After inquiring about a way to wash her white sundress, she was directed to drop it into an opening in the cleaning room.

Ambrielle asked if there were any mirrors, and after some misunderstanding, the voice finally determined that she wanted a visual representation of herself. It projected a three-dimensional image of Ambrielle into the room that moved in real time as she moved.
